This post is about the commission process at MLP STUDIO.

From First Message to Final Brushstroke

When someone reaches out to commission a custom painting whether it’s a memorial portrait, a gift, or a piece just for them… I don’t take it lightly. Every commission is a story. Every painting is filled with care, intention, and love (and yes..prayer, too).

If you’ve ever wondered what the process looks like from start to finish, here’s a peek inside how it all comes together at MLP STUDIO.

📨 Step 1: The Inquiry

It all starts with a message!
Once you reach out either through my Commission Form or email I’ll then gather a few details:

  • Who/what the portrait will feature (usually a beloved pet 🐾)
  • What size you’re interested in
  • Any deadlines or special occasions
  • The story behind the piece (optional, but so meaningful)
  • Any add-on items

You don’t need to have it all figured out — I’ll help guide you.

📸 Step 2: The Reference Photos

Next, I’ll ask for 1–3 clear, high-quality photos of the subject.
Things I look for:

  • Good lighting (natural light is best)
  • Expression that captures their personality
  • A sharp view of the eyes for a pet portrait — that’s where the soul lives!

Tip: If you’re unsure which photo to use, I’m happy to help you choose.

I also have a post on this in THE JOURNAL. Check it out below!

🧾 Step 3: Booking & Planning

Once we finalize the photo(s) and you’re ready to move forward, I’ll send:

  • Payment info- I take Paypal or Venmo. Pay 20% down to lock in your spot on my books
  • Confirmation email
  • An estimated timeline

This is also where I begin praying inviting God into every part of the process.

🎨 Step 4: The Painting Begins

Now the real magic starts.

I usually begin with a pencil sketch to map out the composition and key details. Then I build layer by layer, letting the painting evolve with texture, color, and emotion.

Every painting is done by hand, with care, in my home studio.
Through it all, I’m focused on honoring the subject’s spirit and your heart behind the piece.

📷 Step 5: Sneak Peek & Edits (if needed)

When the piece is nearly done, I’ll send you a photo. This is your chance to request small adjustments if something doesn’t feel quite right. (Most clients are happy with the first look — but I want you to love it.)

🎁 Step 6: Packaging & Delivery

Once you approve the final painting and the balance is paid, I varnish your painting with a protective layer that is water-resistant and UV-resistant. Then I’ll get to work on beautiful, secure packaging.
Whether you’re picking up locally or receiving it in the mail, I want the unboxing to feel like a gift…because it is! You’ve invested in something personal and lasting, and I’m honored to be a part of that.

🕊️ Final Thought

To me, this work isn’t just about painting. It’s about preserving memories, honoring stories, and celebrating the deep love we share with each other.

Whether you’re commissioning your first portrait or your fifth, know this:
I’ll treat your painting with the same care I would if it were my own.
And I’ll pray over every detail because I truly believe this work matters.

Thanks for letting me be a part of your story.
